Strawberry Moon to Be Visible in UAE Tomorrow

Residents across the UAE will have the opportunity to witness the Strawberry Moon on the night of June 30, weather permitting. The annual full moon, one of the most well-known lunar events of the year, will be visible shortly after moonrise and can be seen without the need for telescopes or other specialised equipment.

Despite its name, the Strawberry Moon is not pink or red. The name comes from Indigenous communities in North America, particularly the Algonquin people, who used it to mark the short strawberry harvesting season during June. While the Moon itself remains its usual colour, it can appear golden, orange or reddish when it is low on the horizon due to Earth’s atmosphere scattering shorter wavelengths of light.

This year’s Strawberry Moon is expected to follow an unusually low path across the sky in the Northern Hemisphere, including the UAE. Because the June full moon occurs shortly after the summer solstice, when the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky, the Moon takes one of its lowest arcs of the year. This creates a longer and more dramatic moonrise, making it especially appealing for skywatchers and photographers.

The June 2026 full moon is also classified as a micromoon because it occurs when the Moon is near apogee, the farthest point in its orbit from Earth. As a result, it appears slightly smaller and dimmer than an average full moon, although the difference is difficult to detect without careful observation.

Many people also notice that the Moon appears unusually large as it rises. This effect, known as the Moon Illusion, is an optical illusion caused by the way the human brain perceives the Moon when it is viewed near familiar objects such as buildings, trees or mountains. The Moon’s actual size does not change during moonrise.

In the UAE, the best time to observe the Strawberry Moon is shortly after sunset on June 30, when it rises above the eastern horizon. It will remain visible throughout the night if skies are clear. Open locations with minimal light pollution, such as deserts, beaches and parks, generally provide the best viewing conditions. No special equipment is required, although binoculars can provide a clearer view of the Moon’s surface.

The Strawberry Moon is one of several traditional names given to full moons throughout the year, reflecting seasonal events and agricultural traditions. June’s full moon has also been known by names such as the Honey Moon, Mead Moon and Rose Moon in different cultures. With clear skies, residents across the UAE can expect to enjoy one of the year’s most recognisable full moons, combining centuries-old cultural traditions with an opportunity to observe a notable astronomical event.
