UAE School Bus Services Postponed as Classes Return April 20

Students across the UAE are heading back to classrooms next week, but they will not be riding school buses on day one. The Ministry of Education confirmed on Thursday that bus operations for all public and private nurseries, kindergartens, and schools are postponed for now, even as regular campus classes resume across all schools and nurseries on Monday, April 20, 2026.

The ministry said the pause on bus services is temporary, designed to allow transport authorities to wrap up safety and logistics checks before putting vehicles back on the road. The move is intended to allow authorities and municipalities to complete operational readiness checks and ensure services meet required safety standards before restarting. Updates will come through official channels only, the ministry added.

The suspension will not be open-ended. It will be reviewed weekly in coordination with relevant authorities. Parents should watch for announcements from the Ministry of Education and local education bodies before making any assumptions about when buses will roll again.

UAE Schools Returning After Weeks of Distance Learning

The return to in-person learning caps a stretch of remote schooling that began in early March. Distance learning was introduced on March 2, 2026 as a precautionary measure amid regional security concerns following Iran’s attacks on Gulf countries, including the UAE. What started as a short-term measure dragged on for over six weeks as authorities monitored the security situation and assessed school readiness.

Schools completed the necessary readiness and preparation plans ahead of the April 20 return, including facility preparedness, training of educational and administrative staff, and updating safety and security procedures. The ministry said institutions will remain ready to shift back to remote learning if conditions change.

Private schools will have the flexibility to implement a hybrid rotational model when needed, subject to approval from local education authorities. However, the ministry drew a clear line on staffing: the same teacher cannot be assigned to deliver both in-person and remote lessons simultaneously, to protect teaching quality and manage workload fairly.

Dubai’s KHDA confirmed that private schools and higher education institutions in the emirate will resume on-site learning from Monday, April 20. Sharjah’s Private Education Authority issued a parallel announcement covering all institutions in the emirate from the same date.

The UAE has suspended the operation of school buses, meaning they will not be in use when pupils return to classrooms next week.

What UAE Parents Need to Know for April 20

For the first week back, parents will need to arrange their own transport. The ministry has not given a timeline for when school buses will resume, only confirming that reviews will happen weekly. Families are advised to avoid relying on third-party speculation and check only official ministry channels and their school’s communications.

Educational institutions will remain prepared to move to alternative teaching methods when needed, the ministry said, signaling that the transition back to classrooms will be managed carefully rather than treated as a complete return to pre-conflict normalcy.

The regional backdrop remains significant. The country’s air defences have intercepted 537 ballistic missiles, 26 cruise missiles, and 2,256 drones since Iran began its daily attacks on February 28. Authorities have said schools and universities completed updated safety and security protocols as part of their reopening readiness checks.
